The security week: Stakeholders, IP, and AC/DC

Hi there. It’s time for another weekly dose of security news goodness. Hold onto your laptops. Here we go.

First up is the UK’s Security Industry Authority, and its annual Stakeholder Conference (not a euphemism for a BBQ, more’s the pity). SMT Online honcho Brian Sims was in attendance. Here’s his report on chairman Baroness Henig’s opening presentation; SecuriGroup MD Russel Kerr on working in the private security industry; and Andrew Nicholls on the realities of buying private security services.

This week we’ve also got Jeremy Kimber from Honeywell, who suggests that the real value of IP video is only now just being found – and exploited. Read the story here.

Our old pal The Networker is back this week. This time around he’s on about public sector investment in surveillance. Check it out right here.

RapidVu says its cameras are bing installed in the homes of famous footballers (apparently there is a football tournament of some description going on at present); there’s a profile of PCL Whitehall’s John Legge; and Brian brings us a report from the Security Institute’s Annual Luncheon. It was on a boat.

This week’s Song About Security comes from inveterate rockers AC/DC. They are concerned about the security arrangements in the afterlife. They also played at Download – the metal/hard rock festival secured by Showsec. Read about their work here.

This year’s Security Excellence Awards are considered to be the single greatest awards to win ever in the history of mankind. If you miss out on entering, you’re only fooling yourself. And embarassing your friends and family. You’ve gotta be in it to win it! And so it goes.

Holography and ticketing scams

It’s a rainy September day here in London – so let’s brighten up our lives with a dose of security news sunshine! That would be the advisable course of action.

It’s rare that we get to use the word ‘holography’ in our day to day lives, so I’m happy to report that it’s in use on I4S today. Fighting counterfeiters, no less. Super!

We’ve also got a web warning about cybercriminals targeting innocent football fans who just want to buy some world cup tickets. That’s not fair!

Also in the online sphere, we’ve got some top tips for secure social networking. LOL! 🙂 etc

And The Security Institute is running an event on avoiding and resolving workplace disputes. Peaceful!

IFSEC India is happening soon. Get yourself there. Somehow. Anyhow!

Springtime for apprentices

Astonishingly, the sun is shining outside I4S Towers today – and there appears to be some warmth happening as well. What? Could this be spring?

It’s certainly a time for the rebirth of the 2009 Apprentice Skills Challenge, the apprentice installer skills competition that takes place at IFSEC each year. It’s ten years old in 2009. Cripes! We’ve also got the rundown of Sony’s IFSEC preparations.

Football fans and CCTV technology have been familiar ruckus-buddies for some time now. A new CCTV van equipped by TSS is the latest development in this fine tradition.

If you’re in London, or head there regularly, and you have a nose for spotting suspicious, terrorist-like behaviour, the Met Police would love to hear from you. They’ve just launched a new campaign encouraging folks to keep their eyes peeled.

In other news, it looks like India’s on course for widescale IP uptake; and we’ve got some advice on getting involved with gate automation and access control.

Then, go ahead and register for the IFSEC Conference 2009. It will make you look like a better person in the eyes of your friends and colleagues. And although your family have no choice but to love and accept you, they will find it easier if you have been an IFSEC Conference delegate. It’s the way of the world.
